It’s Fun-Size Friday, which means it’s time for my weekly attempt to compress my scattered thoughts on various topics into a hundred words of less. It’s not much, but hey, it’s not like you’re paying for it. So, without further adieu…
JONATHAN HICKMAN RETURNS TO MARVEL
In the comics world, Jonathan Hickman made his triumphant return to Marvel Comics this week with House of X #1: Marvel’s latest attempt to reboot the X-Men books into something a bit more profitable. Based solely on this one issue it’s still too soon to say whether or not Hickman’s take will catch fire with readers — I pity the newbie comic book reader who chooses this as their first issue — but speaking as a casual reader I can’t deny Hickman’s new premise has piqued my interest. If you’re a lapsed X-Men reader, maybe consider giving the first issue a shot.
ALL ABOARD THE [INFINITY] TRAIN!
Having stumbled across the original pilot online a couple years back and finding myself delightfully intrigued, I’ve been chomping at the bit for Cartoon Network to greenlight Owen Dennis’ Infinity Train for a full ongoing series. You can imagine my excitement then to see the show finally make it’s debut in a few weeks, and you may also readily imagine my disappointment to discover it’s only gonna be a ten episode mini-series. On the one hand, ten episodes means every episode should pack a punch, but on the other hand I’m greedy. Anyway, I’m totally gonna watch this multiple times.
AS LONG AS I’M ON THE SUBJECT OF
CARTOONS TOO AWESOME TO LAST
If you haven’t already seen Patrick McHale’s Over The Garden Wall — another Cartoon Network mini-series that aired in 2014 — you owe it to yourself to check it out. I don’t want to spoil too much of the plot, but suffice to say that if you enjoy atmospheric cartoons with a touch of surreal humor set in a fantasy world — kind of a more low-key Adventure Time? — Cartoon Network has put the whole first episode on YouTube for you to preview. Maybe check out the rest on Hulu after you’re done. You’ll be glad you did.
HEY, KIDS! REMEMBER THE JOEL SCHUMACHER BATMAN MOVIES? WAIT, STOP, COME BACK!
If you have a spare half hour and you want to watch someone try to defend Joel Schumacher putting nipples on the Batsuit, YouTuber Patrick H. Willems recently released an interesting video essay covering that very subject. I’ll admit, as a 90’s kid I definitely ate these movies up when they first came out, but since then it’s always been kind of awkward looking back on them with jaded adult eyes. Seriously though guys, let’s be real here: whether he’s grim and gritty or bright and colorful, Batman is and always will be awesome.
EXCUSE ME FOR A MOMENT
I just really like this song. Moving on.
ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE…
Last Thursday, the critically acclaimed anime studio of Kyoto Animations was set ablaze by a horrific act of arson, resulting in over thirty fatalities and leaving many more injured. I’ve been reluctant to address this; I like to joke around a lot on here but the truth is that when it comes to news like this, words fail me, so I’ll be keeping it simple. If you would like to help the victims of this senseless tragedy and you have some money to spare, Sentai Filmworks has set up a Go Fund Me page where you can donate.
Sorry to end things on a somber note; obviously the last thing I want to do in a “Fun-Size” post is bum you out, but I’m sure you’ll understand that some things take precedence over jokes. I hope that the week ahead is kind to you, and that you are able to pass that kindness on to someone else, whether it’s someone you know or even a total stranger. Make good choices guys, and hopefully I’ll see you back here same time next week.
