Oh. Great. The other voice in my head is back.
THAT’S THE GIMMICK WE’RE STICKING WITH, YES.
Well, as it happens, I could use a sounding board for something I’ve been trying to say.
AND THAT’S PRETTY MUCH MY ENTIRE DEAL, SO THAT WORKS OUT. WHAT’S UP?
I just wanted to state for the record that I do not hate homeless people.
I should probably give some context.
I THINK THAT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED, YES.
Do you remember the last time we were talking about poor female representation in comics and I got on the subject of folks who are…let’s be nice and say “domestically challenged”.
OKAY BUT THAT’S NOT EXACTLY BETTER THOUGH.
I have nothing but respect and admiration for the people who are currently living in hard times and I meant them no ill will. With that in mind, I thought I should come on here and say I’m sorry if my statements came off as inconsiderate. I was a younger man back then and still figuring my writing style out.
THAT WAS LITERALLY TWO WEEKS AGO.
Anyway, I just wanted to take this time to formally apologize to my audience, and take full responsibility for my actions.
THERE’S MAYBE FIVE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WHO KNOW THIS SITE EVEN EXISTS. YOU DO NOT HAVE AN “AUDIENCE”.
That’s it, time-out! Okay, you don’t know that for a fact.
HAVE YOU EVEN LOOKED AT THE STATS FOR YOUR LATEST POSTS?
You know I do! Quit stat-shaming me!
OH GROW UP YOU HACK!
You are upsetting me a great deal right now!
YEAH WELL, WORDS HURT!
…okay, okay, I’m sorry. I’m feeling a little vulnerable right now and I’m just lashing out. I didn’t mean to offend you before.
I INSTANTLY FORGIVE YOU.
Thanks man. Arguments are so much easier when both sides are written by the same guy.
TRUE THAT. SO WHAT’S THIS REALLY ALL ABOUT?
Well I just thought I should say something now in case someone read my older stuff and got the wrong idea. You know, in the future. Say, 8 or 9 years from now.
WHAT A VAGUE AND YET ODDLY SPECIFIC TIME FRAME YOU’VE CHOSEN.
Why’d I say that? I dunno, whatever.
I CAN’T HELP BUT WONDER IF THERE’S SOME OTHER REASON YOU’D RANDOMLY BRING THIS UP.
What old tweets?!
AH, I GET IT NOW. THIS IS ABOUT THAT WHOLE JAMES GUNN BUSINESS.
Yeah, it’s got me kind of flustered. Honestly I’m not entirely sure why this is bothering me so much.
YOU MUST NOT HAVE READ THE SAME TWEETS I DID THEN.
I think I read enough of them to get the gist of it. The weirdly sexist, sometimes pedophilic gist.
SO JUST TO BE CLEAR, YOU’RE NOT GONNA TRY AND DEFEND THOSE TWEETS.
Heck. No. Even as jokes that junk was straight up disturbing.
LIKE YOU’RE THE AUTHORITY ON WHAT’S GOOD COMEDY, MR. “DOMESTICALLY CHALLENGED”.
Hey! I thought we were cool now, dude.
RELAX DUDE, IT’S ALL PART OF THE THEME.
Whatever. Still, I like to think I know what’s funny and what is never, ever funny. And besides it’s not like Gunn is trying to defend them either. I’m pretty sure he just posted this stuff to be shocking for the sake of being shocking; a case of viral publicity gone horribly wrong.
STILL, THAT KIND OF SHOCK HUMOR DOESN’T REALLY FLY IN TODAY’S WORLD. FOR BETTER OR WORSE PEOPLE HAVE A LOT LESS PATIENCE FOR THIS KIND OF NONSENSE. LOOK AT ROSEANNE BARR’S RISE AND METEORIC PLUMMET LAST MONTH.
That’s- look I get it, I really do! If you say or do something stupid online you shouldn’t be surprised when it comes back to bite you in the butt. Lord knows Gunn’s comments deserve to be called out on. My problem with all this is that if Disney has such a problem with them, then they should have caught them looong before Gunn was ever in the director’s chair. It’s not like with Roseanne where she tweeted something insensitive and then immediately got her entire show shut down, this stuff had been sitting around for years! Does anyone know when Gunn was even announced to direct the first Guardians movie?
…OH, IS THIS ME? UH, IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ANNOUNCED IT BACK IN SEPTEMBER 2012.
Right! Now I don’t know exactly when Gunn started with all these bizarre tweets, but I can guarantee you it was well before September Two-Thousand-and-freaking-Twelve! And that’s before taking into consideration that there was probably a pretty long screening process before Disney even picked him for the job! Did no one at Disney take a look at what he was putting out online before they hired him? The jokes weren’t hidden on some obscure message board under a fake name, they were tweeted on Gunn’s official Twitter account where anyone could see them.
MAYBE THEY JUST WEREN’T BIG TWITTER FANS.
Well, come on, even putting aside the tweets it’s not exactly a secret that Gunn’s previous work was a tad on the risqué side. I assume they watched at least one James Gunn movie before Guardians of the Galaxy! I for one hadn’t watched a single James Gunn movie other than the Guardians flicks and even I knew his earlier stuff was edgy, and that was me as a dumb teenager.
GIVE YOURSELF A LITTLE CREDIT, IT’S NOT LIKE HE WAS A DUMB TEENAGER EITHER; THESE WERE THE WORDS OF A GROWN ADULT MAN.
And only now, almost a full decade later do they finally decide to take action! You know what would have been a great time to do that? Maybe in 2012 when he was under fire for posting the same kind of stuff on his own website! Again we have a case where he posts something stupid, he’s called out on it, and he apologizes for it. Kinda weird he wasn’t sacked immediately after all that if it was such a hang-up for the company.
DOES IT EVEN REALLY MATTER AT THIS POINT? THEY GOT HIM NOW.
Yeah, but that was only because Gunn picked a fight with the Trump Administration and got on the bad side of some right-wing conspiracy dudes. Apparently their latest campaign was exposing a “pedo network operating in Hollywood” and targetted Gunn by dragging all his old tweets out again. Only then did Disney decide to take action, not because of their own investigations but the work of some punks with a grudge. It all just seems so needlessly petty and contrived and I don’t even know why politicians care so much what a superhero movie director thinks of them, but that’s beside the point.
STILL, THESE TWEETS ARE NOT FLATTERING; THIS IS SOME PRETTY SICK STUFF HE PUT OUT THERE.
Oh trust me, I’m not denying any of that. Still, at least he admitted to his faults and, as far as I can tell based on the testimony of his friends, he’s done nothing but try to improve himself since then. Yes, Gunn’s at fault here, but let’s not ignore the fact that Disney didn’t do their homework before hiring him. I just don’t understand how a company that just bought out most of Fox for over 70 billion wouldn’t be going over everything their prospective employees put out with a fine-toothed comb, especially the ones they hand out multi-million dollar properties to.
WAIT, ARE YOU SERIOUSLY BAD-MOUTHING DISNEY?! YOU COULD BE INSULTING OUR FUTURE MOUSE OVERLORDS RIGHT NOW! THAT’S A LOT TO RISK FOR A GUY WHO WILL NEVER, EVER READ THIS.
I know, I know, I probably just torpedoed any chance I ever had of working for Disney just by posting this.
THAT MEANS MARVEL AND STAR WARS, TOO.
Yes, thank you for reminding me!
S’WHAT I DO.
I guess it just bugs me to see a guy who has seemingly worked so hard to move on from the mistakes of his past get brought down by some stupid junk he said ten years ago, especially when so many others get free passes. He posted some truly insensitive jokes on the Internet, and that was wrong, but I think there’s plenty of blame to go around here.
WELL, NOT BAD. YOU MANAGED TO GET THROUGH A WHOLE FOUR POSTS BEFORE YOU DIRECTLY INSULTED A MAJOR MULTIMEDIA CONGLOMERATE. HOW DO YA FEEL, “REBEL”?
Well my tablet isn’t taking a charge anymore, I’ve got a nasty headache and all I want to do is sleep in my bed. I think I’m gonna call it a day. Maybe next time we can try something that doesn’t get me put on a watch-list.
AT LEAST YOU’VE STILL GOT YOUR DAY JOB.
Oh. Yeah. Whoopee.
